When to use a Violin Plot

  • When the full distribution shape matters, not just summary statistics
  • Comparing distributions with potential bimodality
  • Larger datasets where individual points would overclutter
  • Academic or scientific reporting

About the Violin Plot

A violin plot is a hybrid of a box plot and a kernel density estimate. The shape of the "violin" shows the probability density of the data at each value — wider sections contain more data points. Often overlaid with a box plot summary.

Violin plots are more informative than box plots because they reveal bimodality and complex distribution shapes that summary statistics hide. However, they require some statistical literacy to interpret.
