When to use a Sunburst Chart

  • Exploring multi-level hierarchical composition interactively
  • File system or budget breakdown with 2–4 levels
  • When a visually engaging hierarchy is needed
  • Drill-down dashboard interactions

About the Sunburst Chart

A sunburst chart is a radial version of the treemap. The hierarchy radiates outward from a central point, with each ring representing a level of the hierarchy. Arc widths are proportional to the value at each node, and child arcs subdivide their parent's arc.

Sunburst charts are visually striking and effective for exploring hierarchical data interactively. They can show 3–4 levels of hierarchy simultaneously. Static sunburst charts can be hard to read without interactivity.
