About the Alluvial Diagram
An alluvial diagram shows how entities (people, resources, items) transition between categories at multiple stages. Unlike a Sankey diagram, alluvial diagrams specifically track the same set of entities across stages (e.g., political voting flows, student progression, customer segment migration).
The flows (streams) connect the same entities across time points, making transitions between categories immediately visible. The width of each stream is proportional to the number of entities making that transition.
